Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good once again this week. Bait fish are plentiful, though still a bit on the small side, but useable and getting better every day. Catching bait then anchoring and chumming the deep flats near Big Pass produced steady action on a wide variety of species. Speckled trout to 20", Spanish mackerel to 3 1/2 pounds, mangrove snapper to 14", gag grouper, black sea bass, jack crevelle, sharks, and ladyfish kept clients busy, and smiling, on charters this week. I also ran a fly fishing charter, with the angler catching a 21" trout on a green/white clouser.
I started my week off on Monday with John Anderson from Ohio who wanted to do some fly fishing. The bite was a bit tough, we moved around quite a bit, with John landing speckled trout, jacks, sea bass, and ladyfish on green/white Clouser Minnows. He did not catch a lot of fish, but did get a nice 22" speckled trout near Marina Jacks.

Action was steady for the Cassano clan from Austin, TX on Tuesday. Anthony and Rhonda and their children Madyson and Zach had a very good morning chumming the deep flats. We fished two spots all morning, with the girls doing most of the damage, catching Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, speckled trout to 17", sea bass, snapper, gag grouper, a bunch of jacks, ladyfish, and more. The fellas pitched in with some decent fish, with Anthony catching a blacktip shark. Fun trip with a great family!
Fishing was quite good once again for Dana and Joe Deltondo from Morgantown, W, VA on Wednesday. Same routine; load up with bait and chum a spot, reload and do it again. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, mangrove snapper to 14", gag grouper, ladyfish, jacks, catfish, and a shark kept the couple busy. The wind quit and it got hot around 10:30, and they had caught a TON of fish, so we called it a morning.

The Dewitts from Dallas, TX were in town for some football competitions and decided to take a trip Thursday morning. Jeff and his two sons Matt and Trent did well, catching a variety of species. The tide was still trickling out, so we drifted Big Pass, casting Bass Assassin New Penny jigs, catching some decent ladyfish. The tide turned, I caught bait, and it was steady from that point on. Mangrove snapper to 14", speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jacks, and ladyfish kept the boys busy. We finished up trying for a shark, had a good one on that broke off. Oh well, that is fishing! I took off Friday and Saturday.
