Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good early in the week on the deep grass flats near New Pass. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, snapper, grouper, sea bass, ladyfish, jacks and more hit live bait. The Radio Tower and Middlegrounds continue to be the top spots. It did slow down a bit towards the end of the week and there is some spotty red tide in the area.
Monday was a productive charter with Peter Saunders, his nephew Julian, and friend Cliff, all from the UK. I caught bait and we started at the Middlegrounds, with the action being decent for an hour or so, then tapering off. We moved to the Radio Tower, where it took a bit to get them going, but once we did the bite was non-stop! Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, big ladyfish, snappers, groupers, and a bunch of jack crevelle kept the rods bent and Capt Jim jumping! After a while the boys were worn out, so I hit a snook spot, but no luck, so we called it a morning.

On Tuesday I had a very similar trip with two couples; Victoria and Kevin Kinally from Massachusetts and Christiana and Greg Hopkins from Ohio. Again, we loaded up on bait and fished two spots all morning, one at the Middlegrounds and one at the Radio Tower. They caught a LOT of fish, probably close to 100, with most of them being speckled trout, but jacks, grouper, snapper, mackerel, and other species were landed as well. Victoria said she caught more fish on that trip than she had in her entire life fishing! we love to hear that!
Eric Naumburg, Chris Conery, and John Parry fished with me on Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesday we opted for "action" fishing and did very well at the Middlegrounds and Radio Tower, catching trout to 16", Spanish mackerel to 3 1/2 pounds, jacks, sea bass, grouper, snapper, and ladyfish. Most of the fish were caught using live pilchards and threadfins, but Chris did catch a few trout and mackerel fly fishing. The bite was a bit slower on Friday, for whatever reason, but that's fishing. Still, they caught trout, mackerel, ladyfish, jacks, snapper, and other species on live bait.
