Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was pretty tough this week, and I am attributing most of that on the spotty red tide that was in the area, though it did seem to get better by the end of the week. Clients landed Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, jack crevelle, black sea bass, gag grouper, ladyfish, mangrove snapper, and flounder on the deep flats at the Moorings, Middlegrounds, Radio Tower, and Marina Jacks, mostly on bait but some on Bass Assassin jigs. Mangrove shorelines and oyster bars in Roberts Bay produced redfish, jacks, flounder, snapper, and a spadefish.

I started my week off with Eric Naumburg, Chris Conery, and John Parry. Fishing was fair; we pretty much picked at them all morning. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, ladyfish, jacks, sea bass, grouper, and snapper provided steady action, though nothing very large was landed. The Middlegrounds was the best spot.
Doc Dojutrek, Bill Kish, and John Englander worked hard for fish on Monday as once again the bite was a bit tough. We tried to go out on the beach, but it was a bit too rough. Red tide killed my bait, so I had to catch more. We drifted several flats near Marina Jacks and Radio Tower and caught a few fish on jigs and bait. I anchored up and chummed at the Middlegrounds and it was a bit better with trout, ladyfish, and mackerel being landed. We moved to Robert's Bay in search of snook, no luck, but caught a redfish, flounder, nice snapper, and of all things a big spadefish.
Fishing was steady on Tuesday. We started off at the Moorings with a steady ladyish bite, most of them being decent size. The Middlegrounds produced a few fish, but the radio Tower was the best spot, yielding a half dozen nice black sea bass along with several other species.

Tod Morris from Chesapeake, VA treated his 6 year old son David to a fishing charter on Thursday. The fish bit very well early, with the boys landing Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, black sea bass, jacks, mangrove and lane snapper, gag grouper, flounder, and ladyfish at the Radio tower and Middlegrounds. However, mid-morning the bite just shut off. I several spots throughout the area without much success. Good thing we got out there early!
I finished up the week witn Doc Dojutrek and his girlfriend Deborah. Fishing was tough, we had to work for the fish we caught. The couple landed mackerel, trout, jacks, snapper, grouper, and flounder working flats, docks, and mangrove shorelines from New Pass south to Phillippi Creek. Live pilchards caught most of the fish, though Doc did catch a few on jigs.
