Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, winter made an appearance this week as the first real cold front of the season moved through. It will actually help in some ways as the water temperatures dropped which got the fish in a mood to feed. The deep grass flats are fairly active with some nice sized bluefish being caught along with trout, mackerel, sea bass, grouper, and ladyfish. Marina Jacks and MIddlegrounds were the best spots. Big Pass also held some mackerel, blues, and ladyfish. Bass Assassin Sea Shad baits on a 1/4 ounce jig head fooled most of the fish. River snook fishing has been hit-and-miss, a couple of good fronts will get the temp down where it needs to be.
I started my week with a river snook charter with Greg Huston from New Jersey. Conditions were perfect; an overcast sky with a light drizzle and an afternoon outgoing tide. The fish responded as 8 snook, gar, bass, and catfish hit gold Rapala Jointed BX Minnows.

The deep grass flats in Sarasota Bay near the passes as well as Big Pass provided anglers with decent action this week. Red/gold shiner and glow/chartreuse Bass Assassin 4" Sea Shad baits on 1/4 ounce jig heads were effective on bluefish to 3 pounds, jacks, trout, ladyfish, mackerel, and more at the MIddlegrounds, Marina Jack flats, and in Big Pass. Frank Alaimo from Chicago, his son Tony, and nephew Jacob had a good trip on Thursday.

I finished up my week back in the Myakka River with Sarasota resident John Sarris and his 11 year old son Matt. The bite was slow though John caught a chunky bass and the scenery is always nice. We need it to cool off a bit
