Sarasota fishing report Capt Jim Klopfer 1/23/2016

Capt. Jim Klopfer
January 23, 2016
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather continued to be the determining factor in fishing this week as a couple of severe fronts moved through. It is beneficial if clients can be flexible this time of year in order to take advantages of windows in between. Structure fishing in Big Pass was productive for sheepshead, mangrove snapper, black sea bass, grouper, and ladyfish. The flats near Big Pass were loaded with good-sized ladyfish, as well as a few trout and Spanish mackerel. Canals and creeks produced sheepshead, snapper, drum, and jacks. Shrimp fooled the bottom feeders while Bass Assassin jigs caught the fish on the flats.

The bite was tough on Monday for Herb Gehrke and his friend Hammond. It was the day after the front, it was cool and breezy and the water was filthy. A nice sea bass and a few snappers were all that we could catch.

Wednesday's charter was just the opposite as Tim Wilhelm from Michigan, his kids Georgia and Zach, and nephew Leo experienced near non-stop action fishing shrimp on the bottom in Big Pass. Sheepshead, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, ladyfish, and jacks kept everybody, including me, VERY busy! We finished up in a residential canal along Siesta Key, catching a nice sheepie, a black drum, and a jack crevelle.

I picked up Rex and Jim Behrends from Oklahoma on Thursday morning at 10:00. For the first two hours the action from frantic with ladyfish and a few trout and a mackerel hitting New Penny Bass Assassin jigs near Marina Jacks. We left them to do some bottom fishing and landed several sheepshead and a decent flounder. Friday and Saturday were blow-outs.
