Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

All of the fishing I did this week was in then Myakka River near Venice, Fl. This time of year the snook are up in the brackish portion of the river. Even though it has been unseasonably warm to this point, the fish still make their winter run up the creeks and rivers. This is a unique angling experience that offers visitors the opportunity to see the true "old Florida". The scenery is spectacular and it is very peaceful. Anglers will not catch a lot of fish but usually catch some quality fish. Most trips yield a 30" fish. Small tarpon and largemouth bass are also frequently caught.
Early in the week Andrew Berryhill from upstate NY and his friend Mark Monson from Mn had a decent morning. The bite was early then tapered off as it got sunny. Mark landed a nice 32" snook on a Firetiger Rapala X-Rap while Andrew got 2 "Myakka Slams", snook, bass, and tarpon. The tarpon are small, but fun.
Later in the week Cb's Saltwater Outfitters owner Aledia Tush and long-time manager Doug Forde went out with me. The bite was more steady with the fish eating throughout the morning. The tide was still trickling in at first light then turned to go out and this kept the action going. Doug had the largest fish, around 28", while Aledia caught the most. We had fifteen or so on and landed nine or ten. All of the snook hit gold/black X-Raps
