Sheepshead best bet in Sarasota

Capt. Jim Klopfer
January 25, 2018
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

A series of cold fronts moved through the area, dropping the water temperature into the low to mid 50s. This scattered the fish off of the flats and a switch in tactics was required. On my Siesta Key fishing charters this past week clients fished with live and frozen shrimp near structure in and around Big Sarasota Pass. These bottom dwelling species do not seem as bothered by the colder, dirtier water that we get when it is cold and breezy. Sheepshead, mangrove and lane snapper, gag grouper, and grunts provided steady action, though moving around was required to dial the fish in. The most productive technique was fishing shrimp right on the bottom and patiently waiting for a bite, the fish were less active in the cold water. This bite should continue all winter for anglers visiting Sarasota.
