Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing continued to be excellent this week Outgoing tides in the morning created a good snook bite at first light on Rapala plugs and Trigger-X swim baits in the "No Wake Zone" just north of CB's. Baitfish are still abundant in Big Pass and the Spanish mackerel action has been very good on the nearby deep grass flats.
On Tuesday Paul Maranan from Wauwatosa, WI took out three of his high school buddies. We caught a couple of snook early, then netted up bait and landed over a dozen Spanish mackerel along with speckled trout, ladyfish, jack crevelle, gag grouper, and sea bass on the flats near the Twin Bridges. We finished up with three sharks at the Marker # 5 flat.
Local Sarasota residents Don Weihs and Doc Dojutrek went out with me on Wednesday. We had terrific action on Snook at first light near the Sttickney Pt Bridge using Rapala Extreme Shallow plugs and Trigger-X swim baits. We later caught trout to 2 1/2 lbs, Spanish to 3 lbs, and ladyfish on jigs and live pilchards near Big Pass.
Later in the week Ray Hauser from Sullivan, IL took his dad out for the morning. Action was pretty much non-stop on the deep flats in the Yacht Club channel and at the north end of Siesta Key. Using pilchards and threadfins, we caught a dozen Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, several trout, 2 12" mangrove snapper, jack crevelle, and tons of ladyfish. We finished up the trip with a 21" redffish near Otter Key.
