Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing was steady this week, especially mid week as a front was approaching. The flats and edges in the Yacht Club Channel and around Bird Key produced Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, flounder, pompano, bluefish, ladyfish, sharks, and jack crevelle on gold Cotee jigs, live shrimp, and pilchards. Docks, bars, and mangrove shorelines along Siesta Key near CB's Saltwater Outfitters are holding mangrove snapper to 15", snook to 25", jack crevelle to 6 pounds, redfish to 24", sheepshead to 2 lbs, and flounder. Live shrimp and pilchards were effective.
On Monday Russ Kahler from Brookfield, Wi. did well at the flats near Bird Key. On Wednesday Dave Buckley from Gettysburg, Pa. caught Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs and keeper trout in the Yacht Club Channel and nice sized mangrove snapper and snook near the mouth of Phillippi Creek on pilchards.
An approaching front brought some wind and rain on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday the Manby clan from Wisconsin caught trout and mackerel hiding behind Bird Key on a 20 knot S.E. wind. On Friday the Kelly's from Chicago, Duffy (13), Conner (12) and Eva (9) dodged the rain and caught speckled trout to 18" on the bars just south of CB's, then landed snapper to 14" and jack crevelle to 4 lbs in Phillippi Creek near the 41 bridge on live shrimp.
Action slowed a little on Saturday and Sunday with strong N.E. winds, high pressure, and stained water. We still caught pompano, trout, ladyfish, jacks, sharks, snook and snapper on shrimp and pilchards. Hard incoming tides this week should result in good fishing!
