Tarpon, snook, big trout in Sarasota with Capt Jim Klopfer

Capt. Jim Klopfer
May 26, 2012
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Clients experienced another excellent week of fishing in Sarasota! I ram my first two tarpon trips, we saw a lot of fish on Sunday but no bites and landed one on Thursday. Speckled trout to 24", silver trout, snook, Spanish mackerel, jacks, bluefish, mangrove snapper, and ladyfish were also caught this week.

I ran a tarpon trip on Sunday morning with Bruce Wheeler from San Diego, CA and a couple of friends. We saw plenty of fish and had some great shots, but no bites.

On Monday morning Becky Briber and Doug Griesel from Madison, NH had a very active trip. Speckled trout, silver trout, bluefish, jacks, mangrove snapper, a mackerel, and ladyfish were caught on the deep flats near Big Pass. Becky caught her fish on shrimp and Doug used shrimp and also landed some fish on fly using Clouser Minnows.

Sarasota residents Susie Alarie and David Watkins fished a 6 hour trip on Tuesday. The speckled trout bite was good, with several slot trout to 18" going in the box and a 24" fish released. Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, small jacks, sea bass, and a bluefish were also landed on live shrimp. I caught some pilchards and we finished up in Robert's Bay catching a pair of snook to 22" and a nice jack crevelle.

John Price from York, PA and his friends Dick Berkheimer and Bill Franz experienced great action on the deep flats wednesday, landing a bunch of speckled trout with several in the slot to 17", silver trout, jacks, ladyfish, and a pair of 2 lb Spanish mackerel using live shrimp. We finished up using live pilchards, where John caught a snook and Bill landed a pair of decent trout.

Chaz Boyter from New Jersey caught his first tarpon Thursday on a live pinfish off of Longboat Key. We did not see a lot of fish, but got one to eat! He also hooked a cobia off the New Pass bar on the way in on a crab.

Friday and Saturday were boat maintenance days, time for a 2500 hour service. Yamaha makes a great engine, mine still runs great! After eleven straight days on the water, I was ready for a couple of days off. Back at it on Sunday.
