Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Lazy outgoing tides in the morning resulted in both Big Pass and New Pass being the most productive spots. Pompano, ladyfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel hit jigs and live shrimp on the shallow bars. False albacore and small Spanish mackerel are still plentiful in the inshore Gulf. Snook are moving up into the creeks and rivers and are hitting Rapala X-Raps and jointed plugs. Sheepshead and grouper are around docks and other structure. In the Myakka River, bass are hitting Rapala plugs and big bluegill, catfish, shellcracker, and tilapia are being caught on Beetlespins and live worms.
Sunday afternoon Joe Rector and his son Jeremy, from Atlanta, GA caught a bunch of different species including pompano, false albacore, flounder, redfish, speckled trout, jack crevelle, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, and sheepshead. We started off on the bar in Big Pass catching ladyfish and pompano on gold CAL jigs. I saw some bird action out in the gulf, so we ran out there to take a look. It was choppy, but there were fal;se albacore all around us. We caught 2 on a Rapala, then came back inside. They wanted a couple of fish for dinner, so we tried the Bird Key docks, where we caught flounder, sheepshead to 3 lbs., gag grouper to 18", and small mangrove snapper on live shrimp. The deep grass near Otter Key gave up some speckled trout, ladyfish, jacks, and a couple of redfish. We finished up fishing a bar in Roberts Bay and caught several more reds, another sheepshead, a trout, and a half dozen ladyfish.
