Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Early in the week the fishing was steady, although it was uncomfortably hot. Still, the DeGuzman family from Wauwatosa, WI toughed out the heat and caught a bunch of fish on live shrimp at the flats on the north end of Siesta Key. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jacks, bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, and catfish were among the species caugfht that morning.
On Wednesday morning I fished with Steve Doten from Maitland, FL and his 2 boys. The sea breeze came up earlier and it was a little more comfortable. We fished the flats at Marker #5 and Bird Key with live shrimp, pilchards, and pinfish. By morning's end the tally was over 50 fish including a handful of slot trout, a Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, jacks, and sea bass. The highlight of the trip was a 3' bonnethead shark that Reilly landed along with another big shark that cut him off.
Thursday morning was breezy and pleasant. Kevin O'Brien from GA brought his son Ethan (15) and nephew Sean out for the morning The bite was a little slow at first, with a bunch of small trout and ladyfish hitting Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp at the Marina Jack flats. I decided to try and catch some bait, and then it was game on! Chumming and fishing with live pilchards on the flats near Marker #5 produced non-stop action on speckled trout to 17", bluefish and jack crevelle to 3 lbs, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish.
On Friday I picked up Fred Batts from Houston, TX his son and his buddies at the Hyatt Sarasota where CB's has a presence. We headed north and caught speckled trout to 18" on Rapala X-Raps and Gulp! Shrimp under noisy corks. The action slowed mid morning and I headed to Big Pass and netted up a bunch of pilchards. Chumming at Marker # 5 produced a bunch of trout, mackerel, jacks, and ladyfish.
