Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather this week was a little challenging, but I managed to get in 5 trips. On Sunday, long time client and friend Dave Buckley from Gettysburg, Pa. fished with me. We caught sheepshead and Spanish mackerel at the inshore Lido Reef, then trolled a bit for kings with no luck. The wind chased us back inside where we caught several more sheepies, mangrove snapper, and small grouper under the New Pass Bridge.
The Stasny family from Woodridge, Il fished on Tuesday and Friday morning. The girls tore it up on Tuesday, catching a nice mess of mackerel to 3 pounds and speckled trout to 18" and plenty of ladyfish on live shrimp at the Bird Key flats and in Big Pass. Friday the boys went out and it was a little tough fishing in a 15 knot NW wind. But, they caught sheepshead to 3 pounds, trout to 20", ladyfish and flounder fishing around Bird Key.
Friday afternoon Bill Carroll from Cincinnatti took his son Nolan and 2 buddies out. Nolan caught a 21" trout near the Mercury hole and a 3 pound sheepshead under a Bird Key dock on live shrimp. They also caught trout at the Marina Jack flat on gold Cotee jigs and shrimp.
I had a great morning fishing with a client that I have not seen in 8 years or so, Warren Persky from Lighthouse Pt, Fl. I made my fist toss of the season with the cast net, catching a bunch of nice sized pilchards. We did not catch a lot of fish, but did catch some nice ones including a 20" flounder and a 22" speckled trout, at the Bird Key flats and finished up the morning with a 20" and 25" snook near Phillippi Creek, Warren's first ever snook!
