Sebastian - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Joe Wajda and his friend, Capt. Jim Nash (a commercial fisherman) of New Jersey had a good day, catching sea trout, ladyfish, and a few jacks—with water temperatures still in the low 60’s.
Rick Pino and I had a great day March 1, with water temps finally above 70◦. We had a non-stop afternoon with pompano up to 16”, loads of jacks and ladyfish, and a nice variety of sea trout.
We were under a tornado watch last Sunday evening, but the twister missed us by five miles, going out into the Atlantic just before we headed for shelter in our bathroom shower!
It’s gotten cooler again (with windchill factors at 37◦ for the past two mornings) which doesn’t bode well for the Indian River temperatures over the next week or so. These cold fronts seem to materialize every week to 10 days, and we’re a bit discouraged about the waters warming up this month.
While discussing conditions with one of my colleagues, who charters off the west coast of Florida, I was told that they’re experiencing another year with “red tide,” making fishing in those waters difficult, as well.
I plan to keep “My Bonnie” in the water for another three or four weeks, and in early April we’ll be leaving for Norwalk, with the larger boat being launched sometime during the last two weeks of that month.
