Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

It seems that the wind will continue to blow right on through the weekend just as it has been since last Friday. However, the weed helps to prevent the lake from getting real choppy so navigation is not that difficult.
Yesterday I had a treat in that my oldest son, (he’s a career Coast Guardsman), got a much needed break in homeport and was able to do some fishing with us. With the wind and weather that was forecasted we placed a call to Joe Middleton and ordered some of his best shiners.
Date fished: 10/30/01 – Time: 7:30 AM to 4 PM – Weather: Party cloudy and windy – Water surface temps: 71 degrees
Location fished: Spillway on Farm 13 – Bait: Live wild shiners
Picking up our shiners we headed straight for the spillway. “We”, were comprised of Scott, George Jr., Don AKA (World’s worst fisherman), and myself. We also throughout the day threw other baits such as Carolina-rigged plastics and Chug Bugs. Of course most fish came on the shiners but we did get a few on the artificial baits also. By the afternoon we were using the dead shiners that we had saved throughout the day and still catching bass. Due to the cooperation of the bass Joe made two trips to our side to deliver shiners today. The total catch was 103 bass with only two small bass with the balance ranging from 2.5 to 6 pounds. All were fat well fed shiner enthusiasts that thought they were bigger.
Our surprise event came at about 1:30 when George Jr. set the hook on a bass and the bass yanked the pole right out of his hands. As he lunged for his rod he went over the side without passing go. He did get the rod, but he didn’t get the fish.
The key to our success with the shiners: Free-lined shiners with a split shot. Strong and lively wild shiners supplied by Joe Middleton. The many songs and jokes that we told the bass to keep them entertained.
