Area Fished: SW area of Stick Marsh and Spillway Bait used: 8-Dozen Shiners
Had the pleasure today of taking out three of the Coast Guards finest Tom, Heath and my older brother George. Picking up 8-dozen shiners from Joe Middleton and heading back to the SW area of the Stick Marsh they were very excited to get started after hearing about the big bass caught yesterday. I explained to them that this area has been holding big bass and to be ready. Today was a little different for me as I was going to fish along with them, which I do not get to due very often with shiners. We anchored up and through out our shiners. I went over the drill with them and then preceded to miss my first hit, which snapped my 17lb line like it was nothing. I through my shiner back out and with in 5 minutes it was down and this time I was not going to make the same mistake. After a great fight I brought in the 10lb beauty. I explained to them that we probably wouldn’t get a lot of bites in this area but when you due it will be big. After a few long distance catch and releases the next big one was on. This time it was Heath’s turn and he was ready. Bringing in the biggest bass of his life he was very excited after landing a beauty at 8.6lbs. After 5 more big bass missed Tom was ready. Tom landed his first fish that was not quit as big but respectable at 6.5lbs. George was being to kind to the fish and practicing his long releases. As I saw Don heading our way I decided I would be nice and let one of the big bass swim his way. The fish did however charge me $20.00 to go play with Don and yes some how Don managed to land the 8lbs beauty. My customers from yesterday decided they wanted to fish shiners again today. After starting at the east end of the center dike and catching 8 bass they decided it was time to head over and anchor north of us. Willie was back to showing his son how to catch the big ones with his first fish being a lunker. He yelled over and I think he said it weighed 10+lbs. It was windy so I could not hear very well but it looked to me to be at least 10lbs. At 11:30 I decide it was time to move. With 10 fish coming over the rail, and at least another 15 missed, and only one fish under 5bs (she weighed 4lbs) the SW area proved to be a winner for us once again. The two factors that have been most important for us have been finding clean water around scattered hydrilla and having patience. If you find one fish chances are there are a lot more fish in the area, and just because you go 10 minutes without a fish don’t be in such a rush to move. Give the area ample time and you should be successful. I moved to the Spillway and tied my boat to the cable. Fishing our shiners free lined proved to be the key. Picking up 33 more fish and missing half has many turned a great day into an awesome day. Fish in the Spillway were between 2 and 4 pounds with on fish weighing in at 6lbs. Total for the day was 43 fish in the boat with another 30 missed. We had a lot of fun today and I got the chance to reminisce about my time spent in the Coast Guard. Photos will be posted on our web site tomorrow after my trip. Say hi when you see us and have fun out there. Tight Lines!!
