Stick Marsh & Farm 13

Capt. George Welcome
January 4, 2002
Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Submitted by George, Imagination Bassin Guide Services

Date Fished: 1/2/02

Water Temperature: 62

Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Date fished: 1/2/2002 - Weather: Cloudy, cool with afternoon rain - Surface water temp: 62

Areas fished: Center west area of the Stick Marsh and the SE area of the Stick Marsh.

Bait chosen: Wild golden shiners

Today we launched from the ramp with only two other boats already in the water. There has been quite a change from the past week's attendance at the Marsh. The clouds already obscured the skies and it looked like a good possibility for rain but spirits were high as Wyndham and Bruce embarked on their second day's trip in search of more of the Marsh's biggest lunkers.

Once bait was in hand we headed to the west wall of the Marsh to an area that has given several big ladies over the last few days. Within 5 minutes of setting up this hole proved it again and bass after bass starting to come to the boat. Off to the east we noticed my friend John Picardi working along an old roadbed and catching fish using spinner baits. The fish slowed down and by 11:00 we picked up and moved to the SE area of the Marsh.

The wind was picking up by this time and the rain started moving in. However it did nothing to dampen spirits as the number of fish to play with was already quite substantial with the smallest about 6 pounds and the biggest well over the 10-pound mark.

Wyndham let us know at one point that he had a monster on but- oops - giant mudfish. Ah well, had to have at least one on this fantastic trip.

Lots of great fish to the boat, lots of laughs, and good camaraderie have the guys prepared to face tomorrows weather as they continue riding the wave of outstanding fishing on the Marsh.

Date Fished: 1/3/02

Water Temperature: 60

Water Clarity: 0

Date fished: 1/3/2002 Time fished: 7:00AM till 11:00AM Weather: Cold & Windy Surface Temp: 60 degrees Areas fished: SE corner of Stick Marsh Baits used: Wild Golden Shiners

I took out one of my regular customers today Frank Delucas and his friend Mike Hamilton. With a cold front upon us, and the wind blowing 20mph we decided shiners would be the best bait for today. After picking are shiners up from Joe Middleton we headed to the SE corner of the Stick Marsh to try for some more of those world famous Stick Marsh Lunker. Free lining our shiners along the edge of hydrilla proved to be the answer today. The action starting within 15 minutes of setting up the boat, and it was going to prove to be a morning to remember for Frank and Mike. On an edge of a hydrilla patch not 25’ long they caught two over 10lbs, two over 9lbs, one 8.5lbs, one 7.5lbs, 2 over 5lbs, and 5 small Bass. They also long released 3 other big fish. All fish were weighed with a certified Boga Grip then released after photos were taken. Frank and Mike were amazed to see this many big fish in such a small area. After four hours of catching big fish and continuous uncontrollable laughter they decided it was time to call it a day. I have noticed in the last few days that some of the females have already spawned and some are ready to spawn. If you catch a big fish make sure you get her back in the water a quick as possible, and don’t release her until you are sure she is ready to swim a way. Scott

Date fished: 1/3/2002 Time fished: 7:00AM till 3:00pm Weather: Cold & Windy Surface Temp: 60 degrees Areas fished: West side of Stick Marsh, and the spillway west end of C54 Baits used: Wild Golden Shiners

Bruce Ense and Wyndham Hewitt met me at the ramp on their last day on the Marsh before heading back to the cold country. Heading back to cold country seemed like a joke as the cold country had found us. With skies overcast, the wind blowing cold out of the NW and temperatures in the high 40’s we felt like it might snow at any moment.

Fishing was the same as it had been for the last two days of their trip with bass wanting to cooperate and tug on their arms. This spot produced until about 11:30 and then shut down. After trying some other spots in the SW end of the Stick Marsh we decided if we could get some wind protection by going out to the end of the C54. Hopefully some of the bass that lay up there would want to play so off we went. We barely had the boat nosed into the grass when the bass starting tugging back and we spent the balance of the day there.

All in all for the three days that Bruce and Wyndham were here they both had fish over ten pounds, they caught multiple fish in the 8 and 9 pound range. I think probably the smallest fish they got was about 2.5 and they totaled out with over 70 of the Stick Marsh’s finest.

See you on the water. Thanks for the e-mails and letters and say hi as you pass by.

Over the last 20 days we have caught and released after weighing and photos over 16 bass that weighed over 10 pounds. The key to catching all these fish has been locations that had the following. Clean water, sparser hydrilla although close to mats, and shiners. Shiners were the correct bait for the conditions and for those that wish to pooh-pooh shiners as lay-down fishing, they need to get out there with them to see if they can do as good as they think they can. Shiners are just another bait and you need to know how to use them to be successful with them. You also need to know where to place them and this is where we come in.
