Fishing conditions have been a bit on the rougher side this last week with heat and wind fighting us just about every day. Monday and Tuesday were the hottest days and temperatures reached the low 90’s. Not much air movement made some discomfort and when you added in the stubborn bass it made for a couple of tough days.
Dal Stanley and his Dad came out for a ½ day on Monday and we picked out way to 10 bass by 11:00. Rattletraps, spinner baits, and T-rigs all produced, but none with any great regularity. We are still fishing the NW end of the Marsh, but finding fish further south as the fish move away from their beds.
Jim Pampinella and Larry Winston were out with Scott and fished several locations using the same types of baits but without the success that Jim is accustomed to on this lake. Jim and Larry were scheduled to go with Scott again on Tuesday but ended up going with me as Scott got sidetracked with a little house fire: (untended pot on the stove is not good). The fire was small, the family is well, and after three intensive days of work Scott and family are back home.
Jim, Larry and I ran the gamut of baits, fished almost all the areas on the Marsh, drank lots of fluid, used plenty of sunscreen, had a great time, but caught few fish. This was the hottest day of the week although we did have some breeze to help. We did spend some time with various top water baits but to no avail.
Wednesday I called Don and told him he could come along but that I would be working checking some of the different locations on the Farm. Two bass were the result using spinner baits and we were off the water by 10:00. We were merrily skimming across the water in front of 20 MPH winds with gust to 26 at that point and it just didn’t seem to be of much value to be out there.
Yesterday Scott met up with Dan Tussey and his Uncle who is a young 83. The heat would get them by 1:00. I met with regulars Brian Baccus, Joe Rheinhart, and Brian’s daughter Paige. Things were destined to be good for us, I was told, as this was Brian’s birthday. His prediction was a good one. We went to the NW area of the Marsh and began our search. Heading out of the NW area are two old hunting trails made by hearty hunters and their trusty 4-wheel drive vehicles in years gone by and we opted for the one I thought most likely. I felt that the fish had to be on the move toward their summer haunts and I was looking to intercept some as they make their way. Using all of the previously mentioned baits we probed and it didn’t take long before a couple of bass found their way to the boat. I put out the marker, and without leaving a 250-foot circle the day became a tremendous success. Rattletraps became the best bait and the faster you cranked them the better they worked. Chrome/blue ½ ounce rattletraps turned our day in the 50-fish day and Brian’s prediction became a reality. The weather cooperated, the bass wanted to play, and Brian’s birthday present was complete.
We did see some shad activity yesterday and will keep you posted. Top water bite is just around the corner. I know that I will be giving it a good try over the next couple of days for sure. See you out there.
