Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

The fishing on the Stick Marsh/Farm 13 just can't get any better. I have been out there since Wednesday and every trip was an absolute success. Wednesday I had Tony and Tom Moresca on the boat with a tag-a-long boat. Both Tony and Tom are experienced fisher and we boated 98 and the tag boat (a guess) had to do in the 50's. Thursday I had a trip in the late afternoon and as reported by Bob and Paul we had 61 bass, plus I was out there in the AM by myself and boated 50. The afternoon trip was that kind of success even though the wind blew quite a bit. Friday I had a 1/2-day trip in the AM and Tim and Suzanne boated 38 bass even though it was very windy. Today's trip Chris Coan, Darren Millar, and Phil French boated 63 bass with one just over 11 pounds to top off the day. The bass are big and the bass are plentiful and the bass are slamming top water. I would like to say that although the bass are plentiful in this fantastic place, you don't just go out, cast a lure, and come up with bass. You do need to do some homework even with the reports that I give. I have posted on my page an aerial map of the Stick Marsh with a somewhat accurate depiction of the old irrigation canals (boat trails) and you need to study this and then go out and locate the canals. Once you have located the canals and start fishing them, fish the skinny-water side. On the N/S canals this is the east side and on the E/W canal this is the north side. The bass are in their summer homes and that means the canals and adjacent levees, areas of hydrilla out in the open, and located around stumps and old gateposts. The biggest bass I have found lately are out in the open areas in the scattered patches of hydrilla. With my reports you should be able to go into the Marsh and have the best fishing time of your life. Predominately for the last 6 weeks the bait of choice has been top water and it has not changed at all. You can mix it up: we've caught them using worms, both Carolina and Texas rigged. We've caught them using chug bugs, thunder sticks, rattletraps and buzz baits. We've caught them using spinner baits, crank baits and jigs. However the one bait that just has not let up is the chug bug. We have caught well over 500 so far this month to attest to the virtues of this bait. Remember, the place is closed, but when it reopens I am sure they will still be in the same places and still biting on the bug. Get on the bass and have a ball.
