Stick Marsh-Farm 13 - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temperature: 88
Water Clarity: 1 foot
The first week of July has come and gone and I have been so busy that I just didn't see it pass. In between trips with clients I have had the greatest time on the water with my 8-year-old grandson. Chis made his first trip for bass on Wednesday and working with an open faced spinning rig and chug bug he managed two nice bass to the boat. His second trip was made Friday and we worked with a Carolina rigged lizard and although still not casting Chris caught and landed 6 bass to three pounds. On his third trip today I showed Chris how to make a simple overhand cast and after a couple of tries he had it down. From casting through retrieval Chris caught and landed 12 bass, had one break off, and one alligator gar. His largest for the day was just a tad under 5 pounds. Chris says his favorite bait is the Carolina rig. Someone asked if I had gotten any shiners for Chris and he immediately informed him that he was an artificial bait fisherman.
We have been out on the lake 6 out of the seven days and every trip has been a great success. The spillway between the Marsh and Garcia has been open since Thursday at noon but has not brought the bonanza that it normally does. However Carolina rigs and patience will still give you an excellent day. This morning with Chris we managed to get about 45 before leaving at noon.
Out on the Farm you have to be a little more versatile with bait selection but the bass are still there along the boat trails. Yesterday's trip the best bait selection was rattletraps and chug bugs. You could have as well worked any other top water when that bite was on. The rattletraps were the more consistent bait however. Fish slow along the canals and you will probably find a good size school. Friend Pete Smith and his fishing partner got into one right in front of us and probably landed 30 bass in less than 20 minutes.
Water levels are rising rapidly with the gates open, which are a great, plus, however still not being up fully, be careful as those stumps can get you. If you don't know where the stumps are, then a map might be a good idea. I have an aerial view map on my pages and you can contact me if you would like a regular map. The front is still too low to go on plane so idle your way across the Marsh to the canal.
When you come here think fish, think boat trails, think hydrilla, be versatile with bait selections and have a great time. If you have any questions that I might be able to answer send me e-mail. I answer them all. You can also get some good info on my pages. Good fishing and hope to see you out there.
