Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
July 12, 2004
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

It was Friday morning as we headed south out of the St. Lucie inlet to catch bait for our trip. We loaded up at one of my favorite bait spots and headed east. There was bait getting busted up all over the surface for a couple of miles so I decided to stop in only 60 ft. of water and start slow trolling live sardines. Our full spread was not ready yet when two reels started screaming. They were only bonito but they always give such a great fight. It was several minutes later when the first king hit and it was soon followed by a 30 lb smoker which took 3 runs from the boat. About an hour later we came across a small weed line in 70 ft and pulled out 3 nice dolphin up to 15 lbs. A group of porpoise started playing with our baits and followed us for miles. We decided to call it a day and headed home to clean our catch.

There has been a decent sailfish bite in the 200ft. area. A number of cobia are being caught around structure and tarpon are rolling on the beaches in the early hours and have also been caught near Club Med on the north fork of the St.Lucie river. The inlet is stacked with catch and release snook. On Saturday evening two of my friends caught over 20 between them. I went with them Sunday night and we had 2 snook on the first 2 casts before the rain forced us to leave. More later.
