Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
January 7, 2006
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The sailfishing off of Stuart Florida has been red hot. Large bait schools just outside the St. Lucie Inlet have been the attraction for the pods of billfish traveling through the area. Just the other day, we had for releases in a couple of hours along with a couple of gaffer dolphin. This action was in less than 50 ft. of water just north of the inlet. The depth of the fish varies from day to day depending on the wind direction and they seem to move south a little each day also. We have fished them on both dead and live baits but the live bait seems to be their choice. We have also caught cobia the past week with one being over sixty pounds. It inhaled a live greenie in 72 ft. of water straight out of the inlet. It took several whacks with a wooden club to calm it down enough to put it in the fish box. There are plenty of spinner sharks doing their thing in the area also. Spanish mackerel are all over near shore, especially at Peck’s Lake south of the inlet. Bluefish and jacks are feasting on glass minnows just inside the inlet rocks. Pompano are moving in with the incoming tide and trout are once again in season and can be found north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. More later.
