Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
May 12, 2006
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dolphin have dominated the scene off of Stuart for the past two weeks. Gaffers have been the norm while the schoolies took the backseat for a while. Fish in the 20 and thirty pound class were common Just two days ago we boated a 36 pounder with some friends in 120 ft. of water on a live threadfin herring. The big bull took at least thirty minutes to finally get a gaff in him after several runs from the boat. Most dolphin are being caught on current changes and temperature breaks. Some blackfin tuna have also been caught by trollers targeting Mahi. A few yellowfin tuna have been taken 25 miles off the beach. Closer in cobia and kings are near the bait pods which are numerous. The Loran tower south of the St. Lucie Inlet has bee a great spot for the bigger toothy critters, while the near shore wrecks have been providing some big cobia. Plenty of snook are being caght near the inlet and at the bridges. A popular daytime method is to go outside the inlet and catch some greenies and take them inside to fish for the linesiders. The seawalls of the St. Lucie River are producing snook on both live baits and top water plugs. I landed a 33 inch keeper in my yard on the north fork yesterday. Trout and some reds are roaming the flats From the crossroads north. Look for some tripletail at the channel markers and bridges. A 21 pounder was caught last week and made some tasty filets for several people. More later.
