Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
January 3, 2007
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The sailfish bite is finally starting to pick up a bit after one the warmest Decembers in south Florida. Anglers coming out of the St. Lucie Inlet have had to travel to either Jupiter or buoy 14 which is ten miles north in order to get live bait. That situation is gradually improving. We have been able to pick up some livies on the near shore wrecks. Your patience will pay off as most of the sailfish being caught are hitting live baits. Multiple hookups have been the norm so be prepared. The dolphin bite has been scattered but those that find them do well. Kings and cudas are being caught around 80 feet and in. The bottom bite has been decent on both the 3 mile and six mile reefs. Snapper, grouper, and a couple of cobia are being taken. Several wahoo have also been caught the past week. Big Spanish mackerel are roaming Peck’s Lake south of the inlet. We had some 4 pounders the other day. Light tackle is fine but use a good reel because some of these fish can burn a reel out. There are bluefish and big jacks near the beach for both surfcasters and small boats. The pompano bite has been very inconsistent. Some days none are caught and on others a few are taken. Cooler temperatures should help this situation. Trout season has reopened and the bite is on in the flats of the Indian River on both live shrimp and plastic baits .The bridges are still producing sheepshead and black drum. Remember that snook are still off limits until February 1st.More later.
