Stuart Area Inshore and Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
June 25, 2008
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the past couple of weeks out of Stuart has produced quite a mixed bag of species .Sailfish, dolphin, kings, cuda, bonita, and big jacks have been caught on almost every trip we were on. The best part is that we caught every fish within two miles of the beach. One trip we were reeling in a small cuda and three cobia followed it right to the boat. We grabbed a rod, put a live sardine on and dropped it over the side. Within seconds the biggest one grabbed our bait and took off. It was soon gaffed and flopping around the deck of the boat and it took a few whacks on the head to get it into the box. Another day we had two sails on live sardines near some structure between fifty and sixty feet and a twenty pound snook on a rig fished just off the bottom. Add some bonita, kings and big jacks and the rods are bending all morning. We saw several dolphin caught in the same area that day. The best part of all this great fishing is the proximity to the beach which really saves a lot of fuel.
There are plenty of snook moving in around the inlet rocks to spawn. Live bait on a circle hook works best. Remember to be gentle with these fish because they have to be released. Look for tarpon early near the beach both north and south of the inlet but you must be out there for sunrise. There are snook still in the north fork of the St. Lucie River. I released two the other day on live mullet fished in one of the canals. Look for the tarpon to move into the rivers over the next couple of weeks and get out and have some fun. More later.
