Stuart Area Inshore and Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
July 8, 2008
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The last two weeks have been very exciting fishing out of Stuart. Cobia, sailfish, bonita, kings, and snook, have been caught regularly. Last week the Bull Shark reef loaded up with cobia and every boat that pulled up had at least one while many had multiple hookups. They were feeding on the sardines which covered the area. The only thing that stopped the bite was a thunderstorm with plenty of lightning which drove most people out of the area. The sailfish bite has been excellent for this time of year. They are being caught from 50 feet out. A buddy of mine hooked five the other day in eighty feet of water. There have been several days when live bait was tough to get due to cool water moving in close to the beach. On those days we would travel to buoy 14 north of the inlet to catch sardines. There has been a few dolphin caught but not in good numbers. The kings can be found around the bait pods near the beach, along with some tarpon , and out to eighty feet. The blackfin tuna bite has been consistent out on Push Button Hill but most of the fish are small but a lot of fun to catch on light tackle. Some big snook are on the near shore wrecks as well as around the inlet rocks. Remember it is catch and release only. We saw some nice tarpon around the Roosevelt Bridge as we were going out the other day and one of the boats there had hooked up on three of them. Snook, jacks, and trout in the Indian River are providing plenty of rod bending for light tackle anglers. The North fork of the St. Lucie River has plenty of mullet moving in and the tarpon are going to be right behind them. We caught some croaker at the Ten Cent Bridge the other day along with some mangrove snapper. It is a good spot to fish on a day when the east wind is blowing hard. More later.
