Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report
March roared in with two cold fronts, high winds, and temperatures in the thirties for several nights, but our worst winter in years finally let up this past weekend. Fishermen were treated to large schools of giant rays carrying cobia beneath them. Most were caught using cobia slayers and two ounce jigs. On a trip out Monday, we found plenty of live bait just outside the inlet. We loaded up in a matter of minutes and headed to the Evans Crary Bridge rubble in sixty five feet of water southeast of the St. Lucie Inlet. On our first drift we caught a thirty inch cobia and quickly released it. We used a net because we do not want to harm an undersized fish. Over the next hour and a half, we released three more shorties, kept one that was thirty four inches and had to gaff one that was near forty pounds. The last fish took over thirty minutes to boat using spinning tackle that was a bit on the light side.
The dolphin and sailfish bite has been spotty with a few lucky boats finding them. Look for king mackerel in fifty to sixty feet down near Jupiter. The Spanish mackerel are moving in and out of Peck's Lake depending on the water temperature. There is not much to report on the bottom bite until the weather improves. Look for winter to loosen its grip in the next couple of weeks.
Inside the inlet there are still bluefish and some pompano on the warmer days. In the Indian River we had reports of a decent trout bite along with bluefish, jacks and lady fish. Black drum and croaker are hanging around the bridges. We are looking forward to great fishing next week. More later.
