Stuart Area Offshore and Inshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
August 30, 2010
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The second hurricane in less than a week is kicking up the waves and keeping us onshore for the rest of the week. Fortunately we had several good trips that put some meat on the table. We were able to load up on greenies and sardines just off the beach south of Peck's Lake. We then proceeded to seventy feet off of the Loran Tower to check for snapper. After several vermilions, triggerfish, and porgies, my clients wanted to catch some dolphin which had been scarce. After trolling around for an hour with no knockdowns one of the flatlines went off screaming. The fish took off a couple of hundred yards of line before we picked up and gave chase to get some line back. It wound up being one a huge bonita with the circle hook stuck in its tail. After moving on, we came upon a weed line in eighty feet of water. We decided to stop and started to chum with some dead baits from the live well. Suddenly every line went off with dolphin jumping and crossing lines. We wound up losing a couple but put two nice schoolies in the box. We repeated the process again and we added a couple of more fish to the feast.
On our next trip we were once again faced with cool water temperatures witch shut down the live bait. We were prepared with plenty of squid and dead sardines and headed to one of our favorite snapper spots. After several drops with no fish, we moved around some and discovered some great bottom that appeared to be holding fish. We had come upon a beeliner jackpot and we caught fish on every drop. It did not take long to get our limit of five fish each along with some triggers and a few porgies. It was the best bite we had seen in a long time. The king bite was red hot in the area that day and we saw a lot of them boated. We are looking forward to getting out next week when the seas subside. More later.
