Stuart Mullet Run 2012

Capt. Bob Bushholz
September 6, 2012
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Stuart Fishing Report: 09-07-12

We are just starting to see signs of our annual mullet run which normally lasts till the end of October. I like to target baitschools casting just outside their circle. Matching the hatch with live mullet, DOA'S baitbusters and Storms Wildeyes should produce snook, ladyfish, jacks, trout and even some bluefish tearing up the baitschools.

The water the past few weeks has been on the darkside with all the rain runoff but the fishing has been steady with snook, jacks, snappers, sheephead along the south side of the St. Lucie Inlet along with tarpon and sharks in the crossroads. The inlet appears to be rebounding from what I've seen the entire month of August.

The ten cent bridge has been producing a few snook along with black drum to eight pounds. The 25 cent bridge (Stuart Causeway) has been holding tons of glass minnows the past few weeks with mangrove snapper, smaller drum to 3 pounds and scattered snook. Happy to announce I have not seen a single ribbonfish at this bridge in 3 months. When the ribbonfish were around the fishing was slow, so glad to see them go !!!

North of the Stuart Causeway, plenty of trout in 3-4 feet after 8am on both the east and west shorelines. Live shrimp on trollrites have been working best but also throwing doa and gulp shrimp. Have spent most of August fishing for tripletail and flounder north towards the power plant. I believe we caught around 20 tripletail with most fish around 3-4 pounds and the biggest 11 lbs with few shorts under 15 inches. Also on the channel markers were some nice flounder to 7 pounds, lanes, mangroves, sheephead and black drum to eight pounds.

Looking forward to see the motherload of finger mullet due in about two or three weeks. Find the right baitschool under attack and you can fish the same school for over an hour!
