St. Lucie, Indian River Transition to Tripletail and Flounder

Capt. Bob Bushholz
May 10, 2013
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Still seeing some scattered pompano and mackerel in the St. Lucie River but their time is about up. Some small snook and mangrove snappers under the docks along Sewell's Point. We did catch a few bonefish in the crossroads the other day bouncing Joe's jigs looking for pompano.

I have started my tripletail and flounder thing both in the St. Lucie and Indian River. Both species are just starting up and should be around all summer and fall. Both shrimp and trollrites or soft rubber baits will produce but fishing the shrimp adds a few species to the list like mutton-mangrove-lane snappers, sheepshead and jacks.

The spoil islands up and down the Indian River are holding trout on the dropoffs mainly till about 10am. Also docks off Joe's Point are hitting DOA glo and rootbeer shrimp. Mixed in are a few ladyfish and jacks. I'm happy to report a slowdown on ribbonfish in the area. We have been seeing them both at the Stuart Causeway and in Hell's Gate pretty steady for 6 months but have not seen any the past few weeks. When they are around, the snapper and black drum bite seems to be off. With teeth like theirs, they can bite anything they want!!!
