Ups and Downs of Winter Weather

Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The last couple weeks have shown us the ups and downs of winter fishing when bait isn't here. What we have seen is the largest body of sailfish and best fishing for sailfish we have had in the last 5 years followed up by some of the slowest 3-4 day stretch I have ever had. After Catching and releasing 17 out of 28 sailfish on January 11th we released 3-5 over the next 5 trips. We had a large body of sailfish show up with the first major front of the year but no bait showed up with it. So the wind clocked to 15-20kkots out of the ESE and the SE and then South over those days. Coupled with a hard north moving Gulfstream current the fish disappeared and seemed to have had all the fish that were here before the front with them. Fishing dried up from Miami to Vero for everyone. We started to see an uptick in the fishing mid week the 18th and 19th where we started seeing multiple sailfish again and in those days we caught mahi-mahi, Kingfish and 7-9 sailfish releases. We were cancelled because of weather on the 22nd - 25th. We had some sailfish and kingfish action the last couple days we fished and are now missing out again because of heavy rain and high winds. Looking forward to ending January with a bang and starting off February fast win some great fishing for sailfish and mahi on the backside of our coldest and strongest front of the year which is pushing through right now!

The river has been excellent fishing. Marshall has hitting it hard with clients and producing plenty of lite tackle action. Anglers are catching 30-60 Spanish mackerel on mornings where weather allows to get on the beach. His anglers have also had excellent catch and release snook fishing having multiple 4 and 5 hour trips with over 20 releases. Cubera snapper, drum, croakers, pompano have been good table fare for customer looking for edible fish other than Spanish Mackerel. Expect the Pompano fishing to get excellent on the backside of this major cold front. River fishing will remain hot with plenty of species and plenty of rod bending action.
