Tarpon and spring tides

Capt. Kyle O'Hearn

Sugarloaf Key - Saltwater Fishing Report

Memorial Day weekend in the Lower Keys was beautiful. We had the spring tides coming in most of the day. We went out to Tarpon Belly Key to cast net some mullet then headed out to a Key where I had seen a few tarpon the day before on the high tide. Hooked the mullet with a 5/0 circle hook with a 60 lb leader let him swim around on the top for a bit while chumming with mullet I had caught the day before. Less that 20 minutes later a medium sized tarpon smashed the mullet and it was off. Ended up catching one and jumping two. Great weekend. Went out the next day and did it again.

Sugarloaf Key Fishing Forecast:

All of the flats fish should be on the flats this month. The water temp is hovering around 87 degrees which is great for all of the species.

Target Species:

tarpon, permit, bonefish
