Bonita Action Tampa Bay

Capt. Steven Markovich
December 20, 2011
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday was every bit as beautiful as Friday now the burning question will the action be the same. Slick, calm waters made gathering bait on a local pier a snap. I'm loving life with water temps near 70 and tons of bait readily available.

Making the run to my snook spot was short lived as we ran into schools of Little Tunny aka Bonita chasing baitfish into a feeding frenzy. I quickly replaced the circle hooks with Clark Silver spoons. I motored up current of the frenzy and drifted into the boiling onslaught. Drags screamed as Tunny all over 12 pounds made sizzling runs. Each time we tried to run across Tampa Bay we ran into another school. Cast into the schools and rapidly retrieve silver spoons. Don't slow down or pause as the Bonita will shy away.

Finally we reached my snook hole and stated chumming live white baits. After a few minutes we did not have any takers, I could not believe we weren't having any action. I made a small move using the trolling motor to be stealthy. Finally we caught a small snook quickly followed by a solid 25" snook. In the next 30 minutes we caught several flounder and several small redfish then the action stopped.

We changed gears and went to Pinellas Point and had a blast catching spotted sea trout. We managed a 22" redfish along with several jumbo Ladyfish.
