Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
We just had our first cold snap and the fish definitely responded. Almost overnight the snook retreated into the creeks and canals and hunkered down. This is a curse and a blessing. I prefer to fish the open flats but if you know which creeks to look in, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. In this situation it is easy to rack up huge numbers of linesiders. The trout also got bigger this week in the deeper water. We caught some really nice fish in the 17 -22 inch range.
I had a fly fishing charter with a first time saltwater fly fisherman. After ironing the kinks out we got to work. After throwing at some uncooperative tarpon we set off in search of more favorable fish given the conditions. We soon ran into hordes of jacks and spanish mackerel that greedily accepted our feathered offerings. As the weather warms I expect our gamefish to return to open water. This is Florida and we still have a couple months of fall to come.
