Cold Windy day options

Capt. Steven Markovich
December 10, 2008
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sunday's weather required a change in plans due to the new cold front and brisk NE winds. In most circumstances there are options to have a pleasant day on Tampa Bay. Catching bait and throwing a cast net was not an option so a quick run to the bait shop for several dozen shrimp had us ready to go. Fishing canals during windy weather can save the day; Sunday was just that kind of day. Trout were eager to inhale shrimp and a variety of soft plastics jigs. DOA Glo shrimp and Love Lures in white, root beer and silver are hard to beat. Keeping the bait or jig on the bottom was key as was a slow presentation. After the canal fishing it was off to one of our pet stops. A rock barrier were we safely and comfortably could get on the bite. Grouper, black sea bass, snapper, silver trout were stacked up in 10'. Lady fish and several pompano joined in the fun. Shrimp with a small spilt shot located at the 1/0 hook was the basic rig. The first seconds of the fight are important as these bottom dwellers will run right back into their rocky homes. Should you get snagged open your spool and allow the fish to swim out. As winter temperatures fall its important you dress properly for a day on the water. The way it feels on the water will be in sharp contrast to how it felt on the dock. Dressing in layers is a must. Remember once on the water you will immediately feel the drop in temperature add in the boat speed and its 20 degrees cooler in seconds. While you may feel chilly do not forget the sunscreen, brilliant bright sunny days combined with the glare off the water may result in sunburn. Bonus report, spoke with a Capt. just back from Cabo San Lucas who reported the Marlin bite the best he has ever seen in the 10 years he has been going.
Happy Holidays
Capt. Steven
