Early March Fishing Report For Tampa Bay

Capt. Matt Ercoli
March 3, 2012
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tampa Bay March Fishing Report

Well it has no doubt been an early spring. The water is warm, doesn't look like any front could knock it down now, and the fishing is on. February has really closed out strong. Pretty much all the Snook, Redfish and Trout you can catch. I've had many days where it was as fast as you could reel them in, pretty much the whole time we were on the water. I truly mean it when I say it has been that good. Even the slower days I would still rank as very good.

Snook have been biting really well. I have had several trips the last few weeks where we have boated more than 40. Most are smaller, 22 to 25 inches, but we have had a few over 30 inches.

The Redfish have also been on fire. It's funny, one day I go out and the Redfish outnumber the Snook and the very next day the Snook outnumber the Reds. We've had some really big days on Redfish, as many as 50 during a trip. The larger ones are just over 30 inches; the majority is 16 to 25 inch with a lot of slot fish for the cooler.

Trout! Wow the Trout have been on fire and I mean big ones too. I had one trip last week and I bet we caught 30 plus Trout in a few hours that where all over 20 inches, the largest 26 inches. It's a really good sign to see so many large Trout. Last year was an amazing year for Trout. I feel this year has been much the same.

I haven't been offshore personally lately because the inshore fishing is so good. I am sure that the action is getting hot out there though because of the warm winter. If the weather continues to stay nice peak King Fishing is just right around the corner. Maybe I will get offshore a bit next week, though it's so good inside it's tough to justify. When those big Kings and Permit get to biting fast you can bet I will be out there.

Well I hope you have enjoyed my report, fishing is strong. I still have a few spring dates scattered out if anyone is interested. I also have a few summer Tarpon spots available. They will be thick By May 1st this year I am certain. I may go and give some resident Tarpon a try next week.

As always, good luck fishing.
