Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Redfish in Tampa Bay have turned on are all over the deeper mangrove shorelines as well as showing up on the flats. They are feeding aggressively and eating larger pilchards on a rising tide. Fish all seem to be in the upper end of the slot and are looking very healthy.
Snook are taking live bait on both sides of the tide and are beginning to feed heavily ahead of the spawn. Snook seem to be everywhere and very little chumming with live pilchards is required to get them to feed. Many large fish are being caught on the beach and are also very willing to take a fat live pilchard or even a white bucktail jig.
Spanish Mackerel have invaded the bay and are attacking bait pods all over. These toothy critters can be lots of fun with their hard pulling fight and blistering runs. Use long shanked hooks and either live pilchards or cut fresh pilchards.
Trout are on the grass flats from 3 to 10 feet and are feeding heavily on live whitebait, shrimp and soft plastic tails on a 3/8 jig head these baits are catching many larger fish in the 20-22 inch range.
Mangrove snapper can be found easily anywhere there is structure in the bay. Fish from 15-18 inches are coming over the rail. Live bait like small whitebaits are working best. Shrimp will work but live pilchards seem to be bringing more and bigger fish in.
Tarpon are the star of the show right now with many fish well over 160 pounds being caught. Look for them at bridges, beaches and on the deepe grass flats. Live bait like large jumbo shrimp, large threadfin herring, or pass crabs are working on these amazing fighting fish.
