FISHING HOT! WEATHER IS NOT!

Capt. TJ Stewart
January 6, 2010
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bay area temperatures have plummeted! Weather in the 20's in Southwest Florida, as we are seeing currently, is pretty darn unusual. Fortunately, the fish haven't shut down yet. The biggest challenge fishing brings this time of year is finding warmer water. Lately, we've had to move around a lot to find a spot with the right water temperature. The rivers normally are warmer this time of year, but the fish we've been catching in the rivers lately have been small fish. However, after this last blast of cold air, I'm sure bigger fish have made their move.

We have also been fishing around the beaches lately. This is largely due to the fact that the water temperature is normally warmer around the beaches because of the temperature of the Gulf. However, the wind has caused a problem. It has been blowing so hard that you can't fish these areas. When the wind calms down a bit and the temperature warms up, fishing should be great.

We are still fishing with shrimp and jigs and have been catching a lot of redfish. Of course we've had to find warmer water to get the redfish to bite. One morning this week the water temperature was only 47 degrees when we started fishing, but once the water temperature reached 50 degrees, the fish started biting.

Sheepshead love the cold water, and therefore, are showing up in both the Bay and around the flats. We have already been catching a number of these fish, and should continue to catch more of them.
