More Giant Drum Tampa Bay 2/19

Capt. Steven Markovich
February 19, 2011
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Captain Steven's anglers all want a shot at catching a 50 pound Drum on light tackle. Sight casting to hundreds of Drum tailing in 3' feet of water is an amazing sight. The Tower on my Pathfinder is an ideal platform watching for the giant tails of the big push of water signaling the school.

Another calm morning made it easy to locate the school of Giant Drum. The tell tale wake from the push of these large fish when the winds are calm is easy to spot. Like Friday it was double headers for an hour. Today it got crazy around 830 with 12-15 boats chasing the drum into a full out sprint to get away with the bite ending.

Gulp Shrimp 4"on 1/2oz Mission jig heads is the ticket for the Drum. We got hit every cast into the school, just let it sit on the bottom and hammer the hook home when the drum picks it up.

My angler Dave took 20 minutes to get these beasts to the boat, while they don't make long run these Drum are liking being hooked to a tank. While putting back a 50 pound Drum I almost fell over as the Drum made a dive towards the bottom with me holding the Boca grip.

I then decided to fish some docks adjacent to a grass flat that was high and dry. Sure enough redfish dropped off into the canals and eagerly took our live shrimp. The redfish hit like freight trains…wamer65 degree water has them very active.

Trout again were active in 3-4' on the grass flats. Plastic jerk baits, shrimp under a float all work.
