Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Red tide has apparently abated around Southshore Tampa Bay this week. A few days of East winds pushed it away from the mouth of the Little Manatee River for now, and hopefully for good.
After a week at the shop with no live shrimp, we finally had a delivery Friday morning – only a thousand, but they were good sized and frisky. There was no delivery on Saturday, however, so the shrimp situation is still hit and miss – not unusual in July and August but this summer has been very tough.
Nevertheless, good anglers produce in less than perfect conditions. Capt. Chet Jennings reports regular action on tarpon. Capt Larry Malinoski said there’s a good bite offshore, but he’s travelling up to 50 miles west to evade the effects of red tide. He’s been catching grunts, snapper, grouper, and amberjacks.
There is still lot’s of bait in the bay, and it’s no longer dying soon as it hits the surface. That could change any day. Mid summer pilchards often require a small mesh net, otherwise it takes forever to pick the gillies out.
Capt. Mark Thomas said the snapper bite was on today. He said they were hitting live shrimp.
Mangrove snapper are a favorite summer target because they don’t seem to mind the heat, and heat there is. Gulf water temperature this morning was 93 on the surface, and tomorrow we’re supposed to have a high of 94. That probably means some afternoon showers and some lightning.
First week in August presents us with a couple of minus tides on August 02 and 03 with low’s around 8:00 pm. Moon will be setting around 7:00 pm, and that’s usually a recipe for a wadefish soiree.
My new book “Fish the Flats” is now available at Shell Point Bait and Tackle. It’s a complete guide to fishing the flats of West Central Florida. The reviews have been good and it’s selling well. You can also order the book through my website at Tampabayfishingguide.com
