Tampa Bay - South Shore

Capt. Fred Everson
September 10, 2005
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Strong northeast winds have kept most anglers off the water this week. Water clarity is good, but bait has been very elusive. Capt. Chet Jennings called it a day before noon on Tuesday without ever finding white bait. Capt. Chad Manning put in at the Alafia River yesterday because he had been catching bait near the mouth of the river, but said that it had disappeared. He reported a slow day in the heavy chop but did manage to put an oversized redfish in the boat.

The marine forecast for West Central Florida through Monday is more of the same – 10 to 15 knots out of the Northeast, so it looks like we’re in for another breezy weekend. Water temperature in the Gulf has dropped down to a very comfortable 84 degrees, however, and the tides will be stronger in a few days with the advent of the new moon on Saturday. The best bet for the coming weekend will be the strong falling tide around sunrise. The winds don’t really get rolling until the sun comes up, but trying to catch bait will be a problem, if not a waste of time until the wind lays down.

It was windy yesterday, and few boats put in at Shell Point, but those that did came back with fish. There were some keeper snook caught and a couple of big redfish. Water clarity continues to be good, and white bait continues to be scarce and small. The shrimp supply, on the other hand has been excellent. We’ve been getting lots of large and select shrimp in every order. This can be attributed to the fish kill of the recent red tide – shrimp thrive on fish carrion.

More Fishing Reports:

Sight fishing for a variety of species on Tampa Bay's Soutshore. Two anglers fish primarily with aritficials (occasionally we throw live shrimp and cut bait -- no sardines).
