Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

With Tampa Bay under blue skies of Indian Summer inshore action on the Southshore deteriorated steadily. All of the best fishing reports came early in the week, inshore and offshore.
Capt. Nick Winger reported a hot snook bite on live sardines in Bishop Harbor on Wednesday. His clients caught and released several snook in the 26 to 34 inch slot, one oversized fish, and many shorts.
Netting scaled sardines continues to be a tough proposition. Most of the local guides are catching bait at the Skyway, but all concede it has been difficult because of current, boat traffic, and a general scarcity of bait.
Capt. Larry Malinoski reported hot fishing for grouper around Port Manatee early in the week, but said it had shut down by Friday. While trolling for grouper he also encountered a school of bull redfish in the 20 pound class.
Catch and release action on trout has been minimal since the season closed on November 01, but schools of big jacks have been ravaging the flats south of Apollo Beach. They have also been tearing up bait on the surface of the Little Manatee River just north of the Shell Point boat ramp.
Redfish are plentiful on the flats south of Apollo Beach, but they are hanging in very shallow water -- wary as bonefish. Plastic crabs and shrimp are producing a few fish, but it’s been a tough bite.
Stable water temps, light east winds, and stronger tides could turn things on in the next few days. I like the low tides around sunrise as a best bet for the grass flats south of the Little Manatee River.
