Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

A mild cold front passed across Tampa Bay late Thursday night but it didn’t amount to much other than a minor drop in temperature and a little wind. Water temperature remains a very comfortable 73 degrees in the bay, which makes for prime snook fishing.
Capt. Chet Jennings said his clients pounded snook ahead of the front on Wednesday using small sardines. His clients brought three big snook back to the dock, all caught on the lesser baits.
“We had plenty of big baits in the well, but they liked the smaller ones today.”
That’s good news because big schools of small baits have returned to the flats between Sand Key and Big Pass. I also had a report of bait on the flats at Piney Point.
On an early morning wade-fishing trip on low tide Wednesday, we didn’t find any tailing redfish around Big Pass, despite perfect conditions. We did catch a snook and a couple of big jack crevalles on soft plastic jerk baits. We were knee deep in greenbacks when a school of jacks crashed in on us. That’s closer than I ever want to be to a pod of 10-pound fish in a feeding frenzy.
Capt. Byron Chamberlain told me one of his clients caught an inshore slam on the fly on Friday. He said the catch and release action on trout in Mag's Hole was frantic, and that there were some small redfish in the mix. He completed the slam by catching a couple of snook in the Little Manatee River.
I poled the flats in front of Sand Key on Friday afternoon and ran into several schools of big jacks. I was looking for pompano but saw only one.
Capt. Fred Everson will be at Skippers Smokehouse in North Tampa to sign copies of his latest book -- Fish the Flats -- on Friday, November 25, between 6 and 8 pm ahead of the Austin Lounge Lizards concert. He will give a seminar on fishing the extreme low tides of winter, starting at 6:30 pm in the smoking garden. Call for directions or info 813-641-3662.
The Third Annual Jack Attack fishing tournament will be held at Shell Point on Sunday, December 04. Entry fee is $25 and includes rod and reel to be used in the tournament. Prizes will be awarded for the three heaviest jacks. A free jambalaya feed will follow the weigh in. Call the shop for more information at 813 641 3662.
