Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

What had been a great start to fishing in Southshore Tampa Bay in 2006 came to a pause on Friday as cold weather and high winds whipped across the bay behind a strong cold front. Low temperatures for the weekend were forecast to be in the high 30’s, which will most certainly put a temporary damper on most fishing.
The action on sheepshead had been outstanding for the entire month of December, and that continued into January. I fished with Capt. Billy Jordan and Roger Mills on New Year’s Day, and it took us a couple of hours to find an open spot with enough water on the late morning low tide. We spotted some sheepshead in the clear water in a hole near the Cockroach Bay entrance channel and it took only half an hour to put six nice fish in the cooler. Small, live shrimp on a 3/8-ounce jig head did most of the damage
Grouper fishermen also had a good week. I had several reports from anglers who caught fish over 10 pounds trolling over hard bottom outside of the shipping lanes. Deep diving plugs rigged on fine diameter microfilament line caught most of the fish.
There was some good fishing for snook this past week because the water temperature had risen into the high 60’s on the flats. Anglers were catching them around the boat ramp at Shell Point on live shrimp.
Warmer weather is forecast to return on Monday with light winds out of the East, and water is sure to be clear, if somewhat cold for snook. Redfish, trout and sheepshead should start feeding again as temperature rises late in the morning.
