Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The snook bite hasn’t happened yet, but it’s primed. Capt. Danny Guarino said he plenty of snook Wednesday while on a scouting excursion. He said big pods of small snook were staging in the backwaters of Little Cockroach Bay, and that there were impressive numbers of trophy sized fish around the mouth of the Little Manatee River.
Scaled sardines have finally begun to show up around the mouth of the bay near Fort Desoto, but they have been much smaller than what anglers might expect for late winter. I seldom carry anything but a three eighth inch mesh cast net for pilchards this time of year, but the size of the bait thus far is best suited to a quarter inch net.
Jacks have provided most of the action this week, but Capt. Chet Jennings found a couple of keeper redfish for clients on Tuesday, and plenty of 7-pound jacks. He spent four hours in the morning looking for bait, but finally wound up fishing with live shrimp.
Two kayak anglers reported finding redfish in Mag’s Hole just north of Big Pass on Wednesday. Each fisherman had a keeper-sized redfish, but they said sheepshead and trout were not to be found. The redfish ate live shrimp. The shrimp supply has been excellent this past week, and with pilchards and pinfish being so scarce, that’s a good thing.
A few cobia have arrived on the Southshore flats. Capt. Nick Winger landed a keeper on Thursday afternoon, and we caught and released a smaller fish that morning on a large red and white plug. It was the only cobia we saw, but there were quite a few large eagle rays on the flats – a sure sign of spring.
