Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cold fronts and wind dampen angling prospects
A pair of cold fronts earlier this week shut down the snook and the redfish bite fairly hard. Capt. Danny Guarino said that Monday throught Friday the action was very slow in the Southshore holes north of Cockroach Bay, despite a huge amount of recently arrived bait. Most of it was small threadfin herring and bay anchovies, but I found some good-sized pilchards north of Piney Point. Nevertheless, it was hardly easy and I probably threw the net 10 or 12 times.
I had an unconfirmed report of some cobia on the channel markers around G cut south of MacDill, and Capt. Billy Jordan and I investigated, but it was too windy and choppy to be able to see anything. That was early in the week and the wind did nothing but blow ever harder as the weekend approached.
Capt. Chet Jennings said the redfish bite at Piney Point had been very good ahead of the cold fronts. He used fresh chunked threadfin herring on the flats and caught both snook and redfish near the turn of the tide.
Capt. Larry Malinoski reported catching keeper sized gag grouper around the ship’s channel at Port Manatee trolling jig heads rigged on number two planers.
Spanish mackerel have spread out all across the bay. Capt. Nick Winger said he was catching large mackerel in six feet of water, a half mile south of Apollo Beach. We also found them all around the mouth of the Little Manatee River, feeding virtually all day on the endless schools of threadfins. Metal lures on stout monofilament leaders proved effective. Ladyfish also cashed in on the baitfish bonanza, and so did several schools of jack crevalles.
