Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Nick Winger reports hot fishing for mangrove snapper over the hard bottom around Port Manatee. Winger said he went through 10 dozen shrimp in little more than an hour, and boated nearly 50 snapper. The trick to catching mangroves is to use just enough weight to get the bait to the bottom rigged on a small circle hook and a 10 or 12 pound leader.
Capt. Larry Malinoski went 25 miles offshore and caught little tunny, grunts, and big snapper – one weighed 8 pounds. He said the action was constant, top to bottom.
The inshore bite continues to be fickle. Scaled sardines are still on the flats, but you have to wade through a bunch of little threadfin to get at them. I found nice sized pilchards on the flats in front of Beacon Pass, just south of the Cockroach Bay Channel and chummed them in with a can of jack mackerel. A few tosses of the net filled the livewell with perfect sized sardines.
I fished Piney Point for redfish, but didn’t find any there. Then I tried the back side of Joe Island – a usually reliable spot on a high tide, but all we caught there was catfish. Capt. Chet Jennings told me he has been catching redfish around the old ferry landing at Port Manatee, but they weren’t there on Thursday.
Catch and release action on snook at the Spoil Island continues to be productive on a strong falling tide. Try hunks of big threadfin when they won’t take live bait.
Big Spanish mackerel and blue fish are on the six-foot line off the flats south of Apollo Beach. Live threadfin herring have been the most productive bait. Capt. Nick Winger told me he even caught a kingfish there last week.
