Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

High winds kept all but the most determined anglers on the docks early in the week, though I did see a few guys hugging the mangrove shoreline at the mouth of the Little Manatee River. It was supposed to calm down on Thursday and it did, but not much.
I fished with my buddy Tom White that day and we targeted redfish and cobia. We found plenty of redfish on the flats south of Apollo Beach in very skinny water on a low tide. A few fish followed our soft plastic offerings, and a couple of fish actually bumped them, but we never caught the first redfish. We saw one pod of snook, but the skiff was on the fish before we could get a cast off and they scattered.
A school of big jacks showed up this week in the Little Manatee River. I saw thousands of 15 pound fish pass under my dock near the mouth of the river around sunrise on Thursday and Friday morning. Captain Chet Jennings told me he caught plenty of the big rod benders up river that same day on live bait.
Fishing for snook with a Zara spook at first light on Friday, I found a willing jack instead. After a prolonged battle, I finally got him in the boat where he put one of the treble hooks under my thumbnail, leaving my boat a bloody mess.
Also found some trout in the river. Caught an 18 inch fish while hand lining a jig in after cutting out a knot out of the line. Later that morning I caught another trout on the same plastic mullet around Sand Point on a swift falling tide. Trout season closed November 01, and will remain so until the first of the year, so for now it’s catch and release.
