Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Water temperature on the flats was in the 70’s this past week and it turned the snook on in the Little Manatee River. Capt. Danny Guarino called in a stellar report on Wednesday. He said he caught nearly 50 snook, all west of the railroad trestle and the 41 bridge. He was fishing with live sardines he netted at the Sunshine Skyway, and said that bait was easy. Guarino said that it was like spring fishing, and that snook were popping chum in every hole he fished.
The flats south of Apollo Beach were also productive. I was there with clients early in the week and caught some bonnethead sharks on live shrimp. I culled some dead shrimp out of the live well, cut them up and chummed with them. In a few minutes we had a dozen sharks circling the boat. Then a school of jacks erupted a hundred yards from the boat. There must have been thousands of fish as the school covered an area the size of a football field. We hooked one fish that took the better part of half an hour to put in the net, then never got another good shot at them.
A couple of days later I fished the same flat on a high tide looking for redfish, but finding the jacks again instead. I caught two jacks on a new penny colored jerk bait before finally hooking a redfish that did everything but jump. That fish was too good to take out of the gene pool, so I put it back.
