Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wednesday was the day to fish this week. Light winds and slightly warmer temperatures made for a nice day on the water. The good weather preceded the re-opening of snook season by a day, but the drop in water temperature predictably shut the bite down. Capt. Danny Guarino told me he fished holes in the Little Manatee River on Wednesday and Thursday with live shrimp. On Wednesday he said he pulled a few short snook out of the mangroves, but that the fishing was very tough. If the cast was not right into the root structure, nothing came of it.
He also said he targeted sheepshead, but caught only one. Last year every guide fishing the Little Manatee River, Little Cockroach Bay, and Cockroach Bay thrived on a very reliable sheepshead bite. This year the fish have not been were they were last year, and I expect it has something to do with red tide. I believe the noxious tide pushed more sheepshead into the bay, and that they became easy targets in the winter months when the tide was low. This year we had neither the red tide nor cold enough water to concentrate the striped fish into the holes. I have seen some fish under the docks at the mouth of the Little Manatee River, but have yet to figure them out. They run from live shrimp like they were carrying a disease.
Capt. Larry Malinoski said he fished Wednesday and Thursday on the rock piles in front of Joe Island. He was trying to catch mangrove snapper on live shrimp – usually a given. Despite seeing plenty of fish on the bottom machine, nothing hit.
I also spoke with /Capt. Chet Jennings, and like myself, he had not spent a day on the water this past week. Snook season may be on, but catching a keeper will probably have to be put on hold for better weather and warmer water.
